The goal of the federal Smart Snack Standards is to promote a healthier school environment. We have several Pasco County Schools who are exceeding in this area. We would like to recognize the following schools for their efforts; Fox Hollow Elementary School\u2019s Garden Club and Nutrition Wellness curriculum, T.E. Weightman Middle School\u2019s JAM! Program, Gulf Trace Elementary School\u2019s Sea Star Family Moves Program, Sunray Elementary School\u2019s Girls Just Wanna Run Club, and Veterans Elementary School\u2019s Weekly Wellness Tips featured on their news show. \nGarden Club<\/strong>
\nSecond grade students were exposed to gardening and growing vegetables. At the end of the year parents were invited at night to pick the vegetables and bring them home. While Chef Ray made vegetable side dishes available for their consumption.<\/p>\n
\nNutrition wellness taught every Tuesday as part of the curriculum and in classrooms on a by request basis. All aspects of nutrition and wellness.<\/p>\n
\nJAM!<\/strong>
\nJAM is Just a Minute of Exercise originally created by Patricia Friberg in California to get students up out of their seats for a minute a day. This is my 2nd year where I take students and faculty all over campus and record them doing physical activity. Then I edit the film, implement captions, and add music. The new JAM’s are created weekly and played right after the TV morning announcements. Students are asked to get up during the JAM in their classrooms and participate.
\nGulf Trace Elementary School<\/span><\/strong>
\nSea Star Family Moves<\/strong>
\nMonthly physical activity calendars are sent home with daily activities identified for the student and an adult family member to complete together. The activity is initialled by the adult after completion. At the end of the month calendars are returned, completed calendars are charted and incentives are given out. Incentives included items such as Frisbees and water bottles.<\/p>\n
\nGirls Just Wanna Run Club<\/strong>
\nAfter school program, consisting of grades 3-5 females that focused on self esteem, setting goals and getting healthy. Culminating activity was a huge community based 5K at Anclote High School, celebrating all the girl’s hard work and achievement in running and wellness.<\/p>\n
